OUR COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY building through art

We are formally committed to donating the equivalent of 5% or more of our time through pro-bono services.
As part of that commitment, Truefaux Films has established an annual Community Building Program
whereby we select a partner non-profit organization in the Dartmouth-Halifax community
to provide pro-bono digital storytelling services.

we are RASSEMBLEURS

A few years ago I learned a new word: rassembleur.  It was used to describe my Mum-in-law shortly before she died.  A rassembleur is someone who is a unifier, who draws people to them and has the ability to involve everyone (or at least to make them feel involved) in the process of decison-making by being open and friendly.  I think this a skill we shared.  We love gathering people together to share stories, talents and ideas to move towards a common goal.  These conversations open our eyes to new ways of thinking, which in turn influence and enrich our film practice.

We have learned to consider the life of each project past the moment it is created, to ask who do you need to talk to in the community to help make this happen? And to end the day with a concrete action plan.

Bike Again Halifax

Bike Again Halifax is a DIY Community bike workshop. They provide the space, tools, and some know-how, and you do the work.

Bike Again aims to get more people on bikes, promote cycling, increase bike literacy, and build a stronger cycling community. Since the summer of 2000 –through thousands of volunteer hours– Bike Again has repaired and loaned over 1000 bikes. The space provides a common ground for people of different ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic status to participate in something fun and rewarding.  Many people become dedicated volunteers or participate in our group or critical mass bike rides.

Bike Again relies on small funding grants and donations from the community. Donations can be in the form of bikes and bike parts, tools and supplies, food, and monetary donations.

Bike Again Halifax is an Ecology Action Centre Transportation community project.

Emergency Gluten Free Pantry

In response to a need in our community during the COVID-19 pandemic, Truefaux Films set up an Emergency Gluten-Free Pantry, providing a free weekly GF food box to people in the Dartmouth community struggling to afford safe food.  Hannah has Celiac Disease and fully understands the challenges of managing a 100% gluten-free diet on a tight budget.

Over the course of 9 months the Gluten-Free Pantry provided a weekly or biweekly box of GF food to a total of 300 families.
MLA Claudia Chender recognizes Hannah's work in the NS Legislature

LOVE (Leave Out Violence) Nova Scotia

LOVE Nova Scotia is a violence prevention and intervention organization
that works with youth who have experienced violence.

We helped develop their inaugural Valentine's Day fundraising campaign Spread LOVE.

Dartmouth North Community Food Centre

The Dartmouth North Community Food Centre is is helping to increase access to healthy food for low-income Canadians while proving that food can be a transformative force in our communities.

This video captures the incredible enthusiasm of the community and its supporters, transforming a parking lot into a farm in the pouring rain.

NS Masters Speed Skating

Nova Scotia Masters Speed Skating Club is open to all levels - experienced skaters and those wanting to learn so come out and enjoy the fun on the Emera Oval!

This series of 10s social media spots captures the feel and fun of the sport, raising the club's profile in a humorous, light-hearted manner.

Daffodil Garden for Cancer Survivors

"A stroll through the Daffodil Garden will invigorate the spirit and re-anchor us with life. After the spring- blooming daffodils finish, the annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees will continue to showcase colours, shapes and textures through all seasons."

Over 40,000 daffodil bulbs were planted between the daffodil garden and the Alderney Ferry Terminal.  Hundreds of volunteers turned out to help. The bulbs carpet the green space along the Trans Canada Trail between King St and the ferry terminal, in Downtown Dartmouth.

The Daffodil Garden for Cancer Survivors was developed by Judy and Jim Edgar with support from the community.

Life of Pies

A savoury thirty year tale of five plane trips, four children, three partners, two countries all wrapped around one pie. This amuse-bouche follows the journey the ubiquitous New Zealand pie took into the mouths of Nova Scotians via love and friendship.

Special Olympics

John is an avid speed skater, so when the Dartmouth Crossing Special Olympics Learn to Skate and Speed Skating Programs coach asked if we could make them a promo video, naturally we said yes!

Back to the Sea Society

Back to the Sea Society sparks curiosity for local marine life off the coast of Nova Scotia while fostering the desire to protect our ocean in people young and old.

We created a series of social media clips to help build awareness of Back to the Sea Society's ultimate goal: to open a small-scale, seasonal aquarium in Greater Halifax.

Nourish Nova Scotia

Nourish Nova Scotia helps Nova Scotia schools support students to be healthy learners so they can reach their potential in the classroom and in life.

We crafted a promo video for their annual farm-to-school fundraiser Nourish Your Roots to help schools support their own healthy eating programs and initiatives. A win-win-win for farmers, schools and families!

Municipal Councillor Sam Austin

Sam Austin is the Councillor for Dartmouth Centre.  This is the second of two spots we produced for Sam. The first introduced him to his constituents, and the second we released the day e-voting opened. In 24 hours it had 4,000 views. By the time polls closed it had been viewed over 15,000 times. In a district where 7,500 people voted, that's pretty good.

"It's a privilege to work with storytellers like Truefaux. They understand, and share, your organization's passion for its mission and then help you convey that story with clarity and grace.
We're very fortunate to have their advice and expertise.
